The Sound Effects Podcast was created in part because after searching for a podcast about sound effects I was very disappointed with the few results that came up. So in the spirit of true Ninja-Audiology (the practice of sound design by way of the ninja) I decided it was time to be “Ninja” and create that podcast that was missing. The SFX Ninja and Sound Effects Podcast were born.

In creating the Sound Effects Podcast as a documentary style “day in the life of” an average guy with a passion for sound design mixed like a “ninja slicing audio” slamming you into the upright position as the G-Forces of the sound barrier crack your senses… OK so maybe I’m over exaggerating a bit. I get a little excited over sound effects. You will master the ways of the Sound Effects Ninja! Yeah overboard again.

“There are two universal constants in nature. If something is not growing it is dying. If something is not contributing is is taking. As yourself two questions each day. What am I doing to grow? and What am I doing to contribute?”

I have been working with various hardware and software based audio tools and programs since the 1990’s. Over the years several microphones, audio recorders, countless burned CDs (before the days of MP3), and untold numbers of ANY object that would produce a sound were really put to the test. Untold hours have been invested while I sharpened my SFX Ninja skills. Hundreds if not thousands of everyday objects were dinged, banged, bonked, crushed, broken, stretched, scratched, picked up, dropped, and otherwise ever so gently coaxed into making the universe’s vibration we call a sound. Friends, family, coworkers, and the occasional average Joe on the street were almost always happy to let me record whatever it was that was going on. Seconds, moments, hours, and now years have passed as my ever expanding collection of original sound effects continues to grow.

“A mediocre person tells. A good person explains. A superior person demonstrates. A great person inspires others to see for themselves.” – H.M.

Sound effects (or audio effects) are artificially created or enhanced sounds, or sound processes used to emphasize artistic or other content of films, television shows, live performance, animation, video games, music, or other media. In motion picture and television production, a sound effect is a sound recorded and presented to make a specific storytelling or creative point without the use of dialogue or music. The term often refers to a process applied to a recording, without necessarily referring to the recording itself. In professional motion picture and television production, dialogue, music, and sound effects recordings are treated as separate elements. Dialogue and music recordings are never referred to as sound effects, even though the processes applied to them, such as reverberation or flanging effects, often are called “sound effects”. – wikipedia

A Podcast is a form of digital media usually produced in a series of episodes. Each episode or “podcast” can be made in the form of audio, video, PDF files that the subscriber / listener downloads from the web or by steaming to a computer or mobile device. The word “podcast” was derived from the use of radio’s “broadcast” and “pod” from the success of Apple’s ipod. Simply put a podcast is a more modern version of a radio broadcast where the power of the internet allows anyone in the world to become a podcaster online.
